Up-to-date Activities

In past 2 years the Project has fulfilled the following activities:

  1. Trainings on effective perinatal technologies were carried out in 8 project oblasts: Donetsk, Poltava, Zhytomir, Kirovograd,Volyn, L'viv, Kyiv and Republic of Crimea;
  2. A team of trainers were prepared to train health care providers locally;
  3. Trainings on evidence based medicine (a comprehensive method of using valid research outcomes to guide clinical decision-making) conducted for MIHP sites;
  4. Together with the MOH, six protocols were developed and are being published for further dissemination;
  5. Posters and booklets , were developed and are now available at all MIHP sites;
  6. A monitoring and evaluation system was developed which will track the effectiveness of the Project progress;
  7. Close collaboration and joint activity with UNICEF and the Policy Project (Futures Group)

The Mother and Infant Health Project consists of six coordinated and mutually-supportive components:

1.Develop standards of care and clinical guidelines/protocols for maternal and infant health services and practices;

2.Revise reproductive health (RH) curricula at the Institute of Higher Medical Education;

3.Reinforce RH skills and services of family medicine practitioners to become first-line contact for timely diagnosis and referral;

4. Introduce standards/ protocols for complicated maternal and infant cases at pilot OB/GYN out-patient clinics and hospitals;

5.Introduce evidence-based best practices for childbirth delivery services, management of complicated pregnancies and neo-natal resuscitation and basic neonatology services;

6.Increase public awareness on healthy lifestyles promoting improved maternal and infant health. Successful approaches are rolled-out nationally.

 

Intermediate Results:

1. Improved perinatal counseling and services at primary health care (PHC) level through family medicine;

2. Enhanced capacity by PHC and family medicine professionals to handle emergency life-threatening pregnancies;

3. Strengthened newborn care;

4. Strengthened family planning services and counseling (post-abortion and partum);

5. Improved linkages between family medicine/PHC clinics, out-patient/women's wellness centers and maternity hospitals;

6. Enhanced integrated care focusing on prenatal services, prepared child-birth and delivery practices;

7. Established M&E system to permit regular feedback to PHC providers.
