USAID mission director learns about successful birthing and infant care experience at Donetsk Maternity #3
|
In Ukraine, a country with nearly 100% literacy, the average maternal mortality rate is 25/100,000,which is three times higher than that of the United States (8/100,000) or Great Britain (7/100,000); and an infant mortality rate (14/1000) twice that of either of these countries (7/1000 and 6/1000 respectively). The situation in Ukraine is due to poor health conditions of women, as well as inadequate background of health-care specialists and inefficiency and drawbacks of the health-care system. These numbers can be improved however, through consistent technical, consulting and financial assistance provided by the USAID.
To improve the reproductive health conditions of women in Ukraine, USAID supported a four-year corporate “Mother and Infant Health Project” (MIHP) which is implemented by John Snow, Inc. (JSI), in cooperation with Academy of Educational Development (USA). The Mother and Infant Health Project, currently in 16 maternities in 8 oblasts, is working in parternship with the Ministry of Health to improve perinatal techologies, based on WHO recommendations and evidence-based medicine. In particular, MIHP is advocating for family-oriented perinatal care and warm chain principles for newborns in order to improve overall reproductive and perinatal health. |
